Why the Rising Price of Seed?

Birdseed ingredients (sunflower, safflower, millet, etc.) are bought and sold on the commodities market just like corn and soybeans. Typically, prices fluctuate due to good or bad harvests. Lately, there have been some new variables that have altered the cost of seed.

First, the production of ethanol as an alternative fuel has had a major impact on the cost of sunflower. Ethanol is made from corn, and as farmers plant more corn and less sunflower, there is less sunflower seed available for wild birdfeeding.

In addition, there has been a push to use healthier, non-trans-fat oils such as sunflower and safflower oil. This demand has also decreased the amount of seed available for feeding the birds.

Lastly, there is a worldwide increase in the demand for seeds used in many of our blends. To make matters worse, there has been crop damage in various regions of the world, and there is a lower, worldwide on-hand supply of desired grain.
